Urgent: Crash-inducing Videos

A type of video that can crash mobile phones and computers has appeared on many short video platforms such as TikTok. The situation has now been brought under control.

Cause of the Incident

In early October, a user on the TikTok platform posted an approximately 8-second short video. The video starts with blurry showing a man sitting, accompanied by intense background music. Netizens thought it might just be an abstract video. However, when watching until the last 3 seconds, a face suddenly pops up, followed by the device freezing and crashing (see specific images below).

Post-Incident Situation

After the incident, a large number of TikTok creators reposted and published this video, causing many users' devices to crash while watching. After some time, it attracted the attention of TikTok officials, who urgently fixed the issue by reducing the video quality. However, some users still exploited loopholes, and a small number of creators continued to发布 such videos that crash users' devices.

Crash Analysis

According to my research, the issue is that the video runs stably during the initial blurry phase. The subsequent ghost face image causes an instantaneous increase in GPU processing load due to sudden resolution changes and excessively high pixel count, along with software compatibility issues with the video, leading directly to crashes. On some overly old devices, it may even cause a direct restart. It is recommended to upgrade to the latest version of TikTok to avoid the problem.
